Where to go for a safari in Kenya
Kenya is famous the world over for its safaris and the wildlife-watching opportunities they present. There are several national parks where you can go on safari in Kenya, with walking tours as well as driving safaris available in some locations.
You'll also have plenty of options in terms of the types of safari camps available in Kenya. There are luxury lodges, eco-friendly campsites, family-oriented safari camps and more basic tent-like accommodation, so you can tailor your tour of Kenya to suit you. The following are a few of Kenya's best safari destinations:
• Masai Mara – Arguably the most famous game reserve not only in Kenya, but Africa as a whole, the Masai Mara in the Great Rift Valley is home to a vast array of wildlife. It is well set up for tourists and is home to 95 species of mammal, reptile and amphibians, as well as 400 kinds of birds. Seeing the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion and rhino) is a definite possibility here.
• Tsavo National Park – This is the largest protected area in Kenya and is home to a wide variety of wildlife. It's one of the best places for watching the annual wildebeest migration, which sees more than one million animals crossing the plains. Creatures to look out for here include the Big Five, crocodiles, hippos, cheetahs, wild dogs and giraffes. There is abundant birdlife here too.
• Kakamega Forest National Reserve – This forest is home to many creatures found nowhere else in Kenya as it is the country's only mid-altitude tropical forest. Colobus monkeys, flying squirrels, grey parrots and bush pigs are some of the animals you may spot among the trees.
• Mount Kenya National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Kenya National Park boasts spectacular scenery as well as amazing wildlife. The eponymous peak dominates the landscape, with glaciers and lakes adding to the beauty of the scenery. Among the animals that live here are mole-rats, black rhinos, leopards and black-fronted duikers, while green ibises, Ayres hawk eagles, Abyssinian long-eared owls and alpine swifts are among the birds that inhabit the area.
