What is there to see and do?

The main attraction in Antigua is the beaches, of which there are 365. There are stretches of sand close to hotels, restaurants and cafes - such as Dickenson Bay, Runaway Bay and Fort James - as well as beaches that are undeveloped and virtually virginal, like Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay and Doigs Beach. Sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling over the colourful coral reefs around Antigua's coast are all popular pastimes, while there are also a few surf spots (like Galley Bay in the north of the island). Sailing and scuba diving are other water sports you can try here. Away from the coast there are some charming towns and cities - St John's is the capital and largest city in Antigua and you'll find excellent shopping opportunities, fantastic restaurants and historical sites within its centre. English Harbour is another wonderful place to visit if you'd like to learn more about Antigua's heritage.

What is the local currency and what currency should I take?
The Eastern Caribbean dollar is the official currency, which is fixed to the U.S. dollar. U.S. dollars are also accepted in many places around Antigua, while major credit cards can also be used across the island.

Antigua for couples

Romance and tranquillity aren't hard to come by in Antigua but for the most peaceful escape, without the disturbance of excitable young children, we recommend choosing an adults-only resort, like the ultra-romantic Sandals Grande Antigua Resort and Spa.
With a beach for every day of the year to choose from, why not have one all to yourselves? Those on the northern side of Dickenson Bay are some of the most secluded, or for a truly romantic getaway, take a day trip to one of the uninhabited offshore islets.

If you're an adventurous couple, spend your days surfing, sailing, scuba diving or kite surfing, and your nights at Antigua's great choice of bars, clubs and casinos. These are concentrated around the main residential areas and tourist destinations such as Jolly Beach, English Harbour and St John's.
Antigua is great fun the whole year but for the most vibrant atmosphere, and an opportunity to party with the locals, visit during carnival season in August and enjoy two successive, uninterrupted days of partying and non-stop dancing.
